Estée Lauder double wear foundation review: Stay In Place

Estee Lauder double wear stay in place foundation is a medium to full coverage MATTE FOUNDATION that will last up to 24 hours. But benefits don’t stop there. It promises you will look fresh and natural through heat, humidity, and nonstop activity.

Is this true? Yes, but we are gonna still cover more on that in the next lines because there are pros and cons.

What I can say from my testing is that this liquid foundation feels indeed lightweight as claimed but when it comes to comfort, I have a few considerations to take.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation Review (2)

First things first, the moment you apply this foundation, you might feel it slightly heavy and a bit tight after drying out. The good news is that there’s a fix for that: Primer.

To get the most of this foundation, you will need two other makeup items and one of them is a primer or a moisturizer.

The second item you will need is a powder. Some people even buy the double wear powder that is from the same line, but any powder will dot it, really. We’ll talk a little more about that later as well.

Note: The Estēe Lauder’s Double Wear Makeup will also take up to 24 hours and will definitely provide a very natural look. As it doesn’t change colour

I like to use the MAC CC Translucent powder. You can find the review here on the blog as well.

But coming back to primers, I truly recommend you apply one, before the foundation, because as in my experience, will help a lot on how it will feel on your skin and on durability as well.

Another thing is, expect it to feel a little heavy in the beginning even with a primer, but if you apply a primer as I advised, this sensation will be quickly gone, as soon as the foundation settles onto the skin, which will take a few minutes.

After that, it won’t feel heavy on the skin anymore. Apart from that, things started to get better, as I really liked how it looks on the face.

Estée Lauder double wear foundation review: The Promises

Now let’s talk a little more about the promises! Estee Lauder foundation double wears original is defined as oil-free, with a matte finish. This sounds great, as I have oily skin, I tend to prefer these types of foundation.

  • Oil-Free, Matte Formula, Oil Control
  • lasts up to 24 hours
  • Lasts through heat, humidity, and nonstop activity
  • Waterproof foundation
  • Unifies uneven skin tone
  • covers imperfections
  • Medium to full coverage
  • No touch-ups needed
  • Over 55 shade
  • Natural fresh look
  • SPF 10

They talk about Oil-Free, Matte Formula, Oil Control. Is this true?

But let’s be honest here, even though these types of foundations are doing their best to provide a matte formula, in reality, it is never really 100% matte. In my experience, I always had to add a powder on top of any so called matte foundation.

Having this in mind, here are my impressions of that Estée Lauder double wear foundation review:

Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation Review (3)

At the very moment, you apply the foundation, even though it’s not 100% matte, you can definitely feel the oil control in action. Bear in mind that it will not be 100% matte, but it will improve the appearance of oil on your skin.

As time passes by, it will still keep the matte effect but even though this foundation is long-wear, the matte effect will not stick for more than the first hours. You won’t (probably) need to touch up the foundation, but if you have oily skin, be prepared to have a travel-size powder with you because the oil control will not last 24h.

But in this question, we also need to take into consideration what the weather is like, on a particular day, of course, when the day is very sunny, oil control will fade away much quicker than on cold, dry days. Also, if you wear it at night and go dancing, it will be less effective as well.

Does it Last up to 24 hours?

Estée Lauder foundation is long wear and indeed, that’s absolutely true, that it lasts very long. I have used it the entire day and my skin felt great. The only consideration (as I have just started earlier) is that the oil control, however, does not last up to 24 hours. At least not on my skin.

As I have heard many people complaining about this as well, I believe that this is not a concern of mine, but the way I have to get around it, is to use a translucent powder, as I have already shared.

I must say that I never stayed 24 hours wearing a foundation, so I didn’t test it for 25 hours but have used it for the entire day and I didn’t have to do any touch-up, except for applying powder. And when it’s winter, I don’t even bother to apply powder.

Have also gone to night events, with lots (I mean lots) of dancing involved and I was super satisfied with the way it stayed and didn’t need to worry about the foundation stay in place.

Does it really last through heat, humidity, and nonstop activity?

I have kinda talked about this on the lines above, but let’s state it again a little more. This foundation is also known as life-proof meaning, you should apply once and go for your day and night and expect it to last. Absolutely true, apart from the oil control statement, as it will mattify your skin on the first 3 hours of use or so, depending on the weather.

Does it really Unify uneven skin tone?

Now we get to the peak point of this Estée Lauder double wear foundation review. This is one of the best foundations, in my opinion regarding unifying skin tones, since the first layer.

I am not saying this is going to give full coverage on your face, just with one layer, but since the first layer, you will notice a HUGE difference. One thing I recommend though is to use (if you have time) contouring because you might notice a flat look on your face.

Not saying this is absolutely necessary, as many people go around using this foundation without contouring and they are quite happy with the results. But, I have heard some people saying they prefer this extra step to have a more perfect look.

In my case, I never used contouring with this foundation. In fact, I barely use contouring, maybe because I am lazy, or maybe because I just like it as it is, but now you know, if you feel like the face looks too flat, just add some contouring on it, if you have the time to do so.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation Review (4)

Is it Medium to full coverage?

Absolutely, as listed it is a medium to full coverage foundation. I am discussing more on this in the next section, but overall, it is a powerful foundation for those who are looking for a little more coverage, than just a natural (born this way, woke up this way) no makeup, makeup look.

But still, when applied properly (refer to ‘How to apply Estee Lauder foundations for full step by step on that) you will have a great medium or full coverage and still be able to look fresh and natural (more on that on the ‘Did it really give me a natural and fresh look’ section.)

Does it really cover imperfections?

Let’s dig into that because the answer will vary depending on your type. In my case, It worked really well with just medium coverage (meaning, one layer). Depending on the situation of your skin, you might need more.

Let me give you one example. For those with heavy acne scars and rosacea, and other types of skin issues that you really need to cover up, one layer is not enough, and here’s listed a few extra considerations about that:

  • Under eyes: For under eyes, you probably won’t need to use concealer. As I cited before, its best function is to even skin tone, so under eyes and other skin complex differences are going to be fixed like a charm.
  • Acne scars: I have seen many girls with acne scars using this foundation. Some of them with heavy acne scars, have approved it. However in this case, for a more natural look, it is better to use a little concealer just onto the area you want to correct and you are good to go.
  • For those with extended scars, it is best to build it up to full coverage, so 2 layers would fix the problem.

Did it really give me a natural and fresh look?

One of the things that called my attention to this foundation is how it looks natural. It is amazing to see how well it sinks into the skin. I totally understand that sometimes, when we talk about full coverage we might be wondering in the back of our heads if the foundation will look at least ok, not too heavy not too obvious we are wearing too much makeup. Fortunately, you won’t need to go through this with this foundation, because it works like a charm.

What about the texture?

The texture is not too thick, but still a little creamy, more on the liquid side and slightly running (if that makes sense!). It blends really well on the skin. But watch up! In my opinion, it blends way better if you apply a primer or a moisturizer beforehand. I even think that prepping my skin with a primer will make a huge difference in the entire makeup look and feel. So heads up because this is an absolute must-have.

How to apply Estée Lauder double wear foundation?

This is something I couldn’t let out from this Estée Lauder double wear foundation review. I truly believe that in order to get the most of this product you should know how to apply it the right way, and it will also depend on your skin tone, texture, and so on. On top of that some people like it more heavily, some other people like it lighter, in the end, there are many ways to apply it, depending on the final look you want to achieve.

I have heard some people saying this foundation left them with a flat look, some others said it was too heavy, but in the end, I just believe they have not applied the foundation to its best full capacity. Even though applications and tastes can vary, there are a few things that everyone can do to assure the best results from this foundation and the first thing is, to prep your face with a primer. Here’s the step by step:

Prepping your face

  1. Wash your face very well and make sure it is fresh and clean, free from residuals and sweetness
  2. Use a very lightweight primer or moisturizer. I even like (when I have the time) to take this opportunity to do a quick massage in a circular motion, but this massage is totally optional, of course. I just feel it pumps my skin and feels good anyway, so why not?

Applying With a sponge

  1. First prep your face as I mentioned in the lines above, then wet your sponge. For this, you can use a facial surge spray (by the way I have a review of the Clinique surge spray you can go and check); Or you can use normal water, it is up to you, but I normally prefer doing it with a facial spray or micellar water.
  2. Put a little amount of the foundation on your hands, or at a suitable place, and gently dip the sponge in a way to get just a little amount of foundation on it.
  3. Start tapping the sponge on the forehead, then on the nose adding a little amount of the product as needed.
  4. For the best result, I always like to apply surge spray, at this point as it will help the foundation settle even more.
  5. Now, it is optional but you can apply highlights and bronzers as desired.
  6. Then, if you really like to keep the matte, oil-free effect for longer, don’t forget the powder. I normally like the MAC CC Powder here’s the review you can check!

Quick Tip: Make sure that the sponge is almost dry. One tip is to squeeze with a paper towel until all humidity is taken out from the sponge.

Applying With a brush

  1. First prep your face as I mentioned in the lines above, then wet your sponge. For this, you can use a facial surge spray (by the way I have a review of the Clinique surge spray you can go and check); Or you can use normal water, it is up to you, but I normally prefer doing it with a facial spray or micellar water.
  2. Put a little amount of the foundation on your hands, or at a suitable place and gently apply dots on the face, then use the brush in circular modes, until the foundation is well blended.
  3. For the best result, I always like to apply surge spray, at this point as it will help the foundation settle even more.
  4. Now, it is optional but you can apply highlights and bronzers as desired.
  5. Then, if you really like to keep the matte, oil-free effect for longer, don’t forget the powder. I normally like the MAC CC Powder here’s the review you can check!

Applying With a sponge Vs. the brush

I have heard some mixed opinions about that. At the pace some girls might say they prefer to apply this foundation with the sponge, from what I’ve seen, the majority would stick with the brush. In my opinion, the brush worked much better for me, as I noticed a more uniform application and a polished finish.

Estée Lauder double wear for dry skin

There are many people out there that choose a matte foundation, even the dry skin dudes, just because they don’t like the glowy effect. If you have dry skin and want to use this foundation, I hear you. I believe this foundation will still work great. The only thing I recommend is to apply a primer or a moisturizer beforehand, as even for oily skin, it can feel a little tight straight after application.

Estée Lauder double wear for oily skin

If you have oily skin, you will probably prefer to choose a matte foundation over any other type, anyways. The big problem is that most foundations cannot give 100% guarantee the foundation will actually look matte on your skin.

That being said, this is still the way when talking about controlling oily skin, even though in most cases, a powder will still be needed. However, this foundation should give you a decent matte look, that will take a few hours.

Estée Lauder double wear for acne

If you have acne that is normal to severe, you will probably need to build up to the full coverage by applying a couple of layers. Just be careful to build these layers little by little until you find a good term. If you apply too much it will be too evident you are wearing makeup and won’t look so natural, so take your time to get to know and test a few times before actually going out to see how many layers will be the best for your skin condition.

TIP: One tip is to use a little concealer on the areas that you want to hide the most and always finalize with a settling powder for better results.

Estée Lauder foundation review Q&A

I thought you would appreciate it if I added a few Q&As to this Estée Lauder double wear foundation review. I will keep it updated, so at the pace that I receive more questions, I will add them to this section. If you too have any questions, please send them to me in the comments below!

Question 1: will Estée Lauder double wear break me out? No, but to guarantee the best results, prep your face with a primer or a light moisturizer before applying the foundation.

Question 2: Does Estée Lauder double wear have SPF? There are both versions with SPF 10 and without SPF. But to be honest, what is the use of a foundation with SPF 10? None. But, there is a lighter version of this foundation, the DOUBLE WEAR NUDE Water Fresh Foundation, that is much lighter and comes with SPF 30.

Question 3: Is Estée Lauder double wear oil-free? Yes absolutely oil-free and also oil control, very well indicated to oily skin.

Question 4: Is Estée Lauder double wear good for dry skin? There are dry skin folks that use it because they don’t really like the glowy look that most normal foundations give. So, there is no problem with that. Just advise applying primer or a lightly moist, before the foundation.

Question 5: how to make Estée Lauder double wear look natural? Apply primer or a lightly moist, before the foundation. You can also apply a setting spray. For more details, check the ‘How to apply Estée Lauder foundation’ section in this article.

Final Verdict: Estée Lauder foundation review

Now that we finally got to the end of our Estée Lauder double wear foundation review, here’s the final verdict. In my opinion, just a great foundation. I would not wear it for my everyday casual events, but it’s a great product for special events, parties, or something more important that I want to make sure my makeup will not be messed up.

Every time I use this foundation, I tend to stick with the medium coverage, as I like it lighter. If you need more coverage, build it carefully, little by little because if you apply too much it will appear and you will need to wash your entire face and apply it again.

It lasted as long as expected and gave me a very natural look. The cons I can share with you are that the bottle doesn’t come with a pump and it can be messy if you are not careful enough. Another thing I didn’t like is that the oil control feature will not last long, so I have to carry a powder with me to fix it. On cold days, this is not problematic but on hot days, it can be a little annoying. In the end, I realized that there are more pros than cons so, I definitely recommend this foundation, and love it.
